two evenings of performances with Prague Improvisation Orchestra.
Each evening will feature a different work from PIO:
on Friday 5.8 PIO will re-visit the 'visual scores' of the great Czech artist Milan Grygar, who is primarily known as a painter but has produced a remarkable body of work related to sound. His work from the 1960s marks him as one of the first Czech ‘sound artists’. PIO has worked directly with Mr Grygar in realising this music.
On Saturday 6.8 PIO will premiere a new program of the works of Sun Ra, legendary American composer, bandleader, and the original 'Afrofuturist'. Sun Ra's visionary music, which is rarely performed outside of the context of his own orchestra, is a unique phenomenon. He was a free jazz pioneer, while also being one of the first musicians to work with electronic keyboards and synthesizers live on stage. But at the same time his work with theatrical elements, kitsch, 'exotica' and 'space music' made his Arkestra accessible to casual listeners.
Also on the program will be an audio-visual installation from Belarusian artist Polina Khatsenka, audio-visual project White Wigwam/A1 (5.8) and Austrian-Czech trio Poisonous Frequencies (6.8) who will celebrate a new release of their free improv noise rock.

Inspired by Alvin Lucier's Nothing is Real – a re-imagining of Strawberry Fields Forever – Prague Improvisation Orchestra will celebrate its 10th anniversary by refracting Beatles music through its improvisational prism: familiar fragments passing like ghosts, by now absorbed into the collective unconscious.

PIO and Alfred ve dvoře present three days of concerts plus performances featuring unique instruments, manipulated film and DIY electronics.
Each evening will feature a different work from PIO:
on 20.7 will be a performance of Cornelius Cardew's legendary graphic score Treatise with a special PIO group of five electronic musicians, prepared piano and percussion. On 21.7 PIO will debut another in a series of explorations of the music of American jazz composers, this time the powerful music of the great Charles Mingus, with an all-star lineup! Finally on 22.7 will be the premiere of a new work for orchestra and video by George Cremaschi.
Also happening each evening will be idiosyncratic and unclassifiable performances from Veronika Svobodová/Václav Šafka, Maria Komarova, Labodoble (Bagdasarov/Moralesová) and Martin Janíček's birthday band (with Nikl/Ferenc/Žižka/Procházka)

PIO, Studio Alta and Agosto Foundation present three days of concerts, sound art, video, electronic music, and sound/movement improvisation in the unique setting of Invalidovna from Prague Improvisation Orchestra and guests Martin Howse, Klamm & Pelikán, duO uO uO, Obelisk of Light ft. Kult Masek, Judita Levitnerová, Johana Matoušková, Jitka Čechová, Radim Klásek and Tina Afiyan Breiová.
Each evening will feature a different concert from PIO, including Petr Vrba's extended composition 'Rope' on 22.7, noise rock using repetition slowly building to a dense wall of sound. Next, PIO will premiere a new work for electronics, percussion and distant voices from George Cremaschi on 23.7, and finally a reprise of PIO's program by the great US composer Anthony Braxton on 24.7.
Berlin-based sound artist Martin Howse will open every show with his 'activation' of the space via a performative sound installation, followed by a site-specific sound and movement improvisation featuring different dancers and members of PIO each evening.
And not least, every day we'll present a different small group starting with legendary Prague noise kings Klamm & Pelikán on 22.7, fabulous post-jazz from duO uO uO on 23.7, and on 24.7 drone master Obelisk of Light will be joined by Kult Masek and video artist Judita Levitnerová.
